As September 11th Anniversary Nears
More Americans Trust U.S. government

ARLINGTON, Texas—As the anniversary of last year’s terrorist attacks draws near, slightly more Americans trust the U.S. government now than before September 11, 2001, according to a recent survey by Decision Analyst Inc., a leading international marketing research firms.

In its August Internet report, titled "2002 Personal Opinion and Lifestyle Study," Decision Analyst found that 57% of respondents had either "a lot of trust" or "some trust" in the federal government, compared to 53% last summer. Conversely 43% of respondents this summer said they had either "little trust" or "no trust," compared to 47% last year.

Among those saying they have "no trust" in the government, 18- to 24-year-olds were most prominent (14% of those respondents), followed by respondents 55 and over (13%), 35 to 44 (12%), 45 to 54 (11%), and 25 to 34 (11%).

Among all male respondents, 9% said they have "a lot of trust'' in the government, while 8% of all female respondents felt the same way. Conversely, 13% of all male respondents said they have "no trust" in the government, while 11% of all females said the same.

For its "2002 Personal Opinion and Lifestyle Study", Decision Analyst drew on a balanced sample of 3,136 American Consumer Opinion™ members. The study’s margin of error is +/- 2% at a 95% confidence level. The survey was conducted from August 5th to August 12th, 2002.
