Survey Indicates; 78% Of Americans Will Vacation This Summer;
Very Little Decline Seen In International Travel Plans
Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas - As the summer vacation season officially starts this
weekend, 78%, or eight out of 10, Americans say they will take at least one
vacation trip this summer, according to a survey by American Consumer OpinionT
Online (www.acop.com), a worldwide panel of consumers who get paid to take
surveys. The remaining 22% of the respondents either havent yet decided
whether to take a vacation trip, or do not plan to take any vacation trips this
year.
"Apparently, consumers are not going to let the threat of terrorism keep
them home this summer, and surprisingly few of them are planning to avoid
flying this summer," said Jerry W. Thomas, President/CEO of Decision
Analyst, Inc., which owns American Consumer Opinion Online.
How many vacation trips will Americans take this year? One trip, said 38% of the
survey respondents, and two trips, said 28%.
Despite the tension caused by terrorism warnings, 40% of the survey respondents
said they would travel by air for their vacation trip. In contrast, 45% said
they traveled by air on last years vacation, so there does appear to be a
very slight decline in air travel plans.
Of those who intend to travel by air, the United States (including Alaska and
Hawaii) tops the list of destinations for this summer, with 82% planning U.S.
vacations. The number of respondents who plan to visit Europe, 11%, is
virtually unchanged from last year.
Based on an Internet survey of 495 U.S. respondents balanced by gender, age and
geography, conducted between May 10 and May 17, 2002. Respondents were members
of the American Consumer Opinion Online panel, one of the largest
consumer panels in the world, which includes over 3.5 million consumers in over
150 countries. Consumers can sign up to join the panel in one of eight
languages: English, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, Italian, French, German,
Japanese or Chinese.
