Electronic Games

Arlington, Texas — Nearly 38 percent of America’s households now have electronic games, according to a recent nationwide survey by Decision Analyst, Inc.

In its survey of 9,397 households, Decision Analyst found the highest ownership of electronic games in households headed by someone 18 to 24 years of age (64% ownership), followed by households headed by someone 35-44 (58% ownership). Ownership of electronic games is lowest among those 55 years of age and older, according to the survey.

"In the past five years, electronic games – led by such brands as Nintendo, Sega, and Sony Play Station – have been one of the fastest growing categories in the home electronics market," said Jerry W. Thomas, President/CEO of Decision Analyst. "Young adults and households with children represent the most highly developed segments of the market."

"Surprisingly, ownership of electronic games does not vary that much by household income. Ownership levels are lower among lower income households, but 31% of all households with annual incomes less than $25,000 have electronic games, compared to around 40% ownership in higher income households. High school and college graduates are about equally likely to own electronic games (about 40% own games), and households headed by people with post graduate degrees are least likely (26% ownership)," Thomas stated.

Electronic game ownership appears to be lower in the Mountain and Pacific U.S. Census Divisions, despite the relatively high ownership of PC’s in those two areas. Electronic game ownership is highest in the Mid Atlantic and and East North Central Census Divisions (see attached graphs).

Decision Analyst is a leading national marketing research firm specializing in advertising testing, product testing, new products research and strategy research. Its survey of electronic games has a margin error of plus or minus 1%.
